The announcement came nearly immediately after Washington District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentenced Manafort in the second of two federal cases brought against him by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. But even if President Trump pardons Manafort at the federal level, he could still face prison time at the state level if a Vance/Manhattan DA prosecution is successful.
The question of whether anyone in the Trump campaign "conspired or colluded with" the Russian government "was not presented in this case", she said, so for Manafort's attorneys to emphasise that no such collusion was proven, she said, is "a non-sequitur".
In this June 21, 2017, file photo, former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the special counsel probing Russian interference in the 2016 election, departs Capitol Hill following a closed door meeting in Washington.
Jackson could have given Manafort up to 10 years in prison in the Washington case - five for each of the two conspiracy counts. A number of people wrote letters to Jackson supporting Manafort including his wife, one of his daughters and his brother. He has not learned a harsh lesson.
"His work was corrosive to faith in the political process, both in the United States and overseas", prosecutor Andrew Weissmann said. "That's Not What She Said!" which was picked up clearly on camera.
Trump has called Mueller's investigation a "witch hunt", and Manafort's lawyers have argued that this case does nothing to prove that the campaign conspired with Russian Federation. I am her primary caregiver. this case has taken enough from me already.
Manafort, who was sentenced in Virginia last week on bank- and tax-fraud charges, apologized for his actions and asked Jackson for leniency so he could care for his wife in their old age.
Imran Khan: Won't let armed groups function in Pakistan
Going a step ahead, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ ) warned that India and Pakistan were "flirting with nuclear disaster". He said all the Indian designs against Pakistan went in vain as the world has totally rejected the Indian stance.
The New York Times reported that Manafort's lawyers are likely to challenge the New York indictment by arguing it constitutes double jeopardy for crimes he has already been tried for in federal court.
Jackson said she read all the letters before determining his sentence. Others who have pleaded guilty include former campaign aides Rick Gates and George Papadopoulos, former USA national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen.
Andrew Weissman, one of the prosecutors, said that Manafort may have lied because he did not want "negative consequences in terms of the other motive that Mr. Manafort could have, which is to at least augment his chances for a pardon".
"But for a short stint as campaign manager in a presidential election, I don't think we'd be here today", Downing said.
Jackson ruled that Manafort should get a tougher sentence because he acted in a leadership role, directing others to participate in a crime, rejecting a defence argument that the sentencing enhancement should only apply to those who lead criminal organizations.
The Mueller team had prosecuted Manafort in Washington and Virginia for his foreign consulting work on behalf of a pro-Russia Ukrainian political party.
Jackson said Manafort's dishonesty is ongoing.
