Huge crowds waved Vatican flags and cheered as the Pope made his entrance in a white open-top jeep for the milestone moment.

The UAE has been Saudi Arabia's main ally in the war in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is fighting the country's Houthi rebels - a conflict which has sparked the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

An overwhelming number of them have something in common: they are all migrants.

"Someone who is afflicted, who suffers injustice, who does everything he can to be a peacemaker, knows what it means to suffer", Francis told the crowd in his homily.

"The Lord is faithful and does not abandon his people", Pope Francis said.

In his speech in front of an audience of religious leaders in the United Arab Emirates, Francis warned that the future of humanity was at stake unless religions come together to resist the "logic of armed power".

Prayers were said in multiple languages such as Tagalog, which is spoken by many people in the Philippines, and Konkani, spoken in parts of India.

The mass celebration comes a day after making a broad appeal for Christian and Muslim leaders to promote peace and reject war.

Jared Goff’s Super Bowl 53 Performance Is Getting Picked Apart
Patriots QB Tom Brady became the first player to ever win six Super Bowls in what was the lowest scoring Super Bowl of all time. Instead of watching the Super Bowl, thousands of New Orleans residents turned out for a combination demonstration/celebration.

The pope and the grand imam of al-Azhar signed a historic declaration of fraternity, calling for peace between countries, religions and races, before an audience of religious leaders across the world from Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and other different beliefs.

We "resolutely declare that religions must never incite war, hateful attitudes, hostility and extremism, nor must they incite violence or the shedding of blood", the document reads. "These tragic realities are the outcome of a deviation from religious teachings". "I am thinking in particular of Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Libya", he said at an inter-religious meeting at the UAE Founder's Memorial.

"Every form of violence must be condemned without hesitation, because we gravely profane God's name when we use it to justify hatred and violence against a brother or sister".

"The UAE has been, and will continue to be, a beacon of tolerance, moderation and coexistence".

The pope was expected to raise the issue of Yemen, devastated by a war in which the UAE is a key player, in talks with Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed. Many of those adherents are foreigners who arrived in search of work in a country whose population is comprised mostly of foreigners.

The UAE invited the pope to visit as part of its 2019 "Year of Tolerance" which has its own designated ministry. He said they discussed increased cooperation in several areas. "Crosses can't be seen in public, and conversion from Islam is a crime punishable by death".

Indeed, in his homily, he recalled the example of his namesake, Saint Francis of Assisi, who 800 years ago amid the Crusades urged Christians not to argue or be disagreeable with Arabs and Muslims.

Pope Francis meanwhile is well known as an advocate for tolerance and the laying aside of differences and for his determined call for the pursuit of peace and fraternity among humanity, and the award recognises this continued commitment and approach. "You are a choir composed of numerous nations, languages and rites; a diversity that the Holy Spirit loves and wants to harmonize ever more, in order to make a symphony".
