Legendary Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim took to the court Saturday night for the first time since the accident he was involved in earlier in the week that killed a pedestrian, addressing the tragedy in an emotional statement.
A moment of silence, in English and Spanish, was observed for the victim, 51-year-old local man Jorge Jimenez and his family.
Syracuse police say Jimenez was an occupant in a black Dodge Charger with three others when they apparently lost control on a patch of ice and hit a guardrail before midnight Wednesday.
"The Jimenez family has suffered a tremendous loss", he wrote. Juli and I extend our deepest sympathies to the Jimenez family. The oncoming vehicle, driven by Boeheim, then tried to avoid the disabled auto but hit Jimenez, who was standing on the side of the road, police said.
Jim Boeheim took his customary spot along the Carrier Dome sideline Saturday out of duty. "It's not going to be any better next year", he said.
"This is something that will be with me for the rest of my life", he said.

Last night the Houston Rockets defeated the Golden State Warriors 118-112 in a shootout with some major absences on the roster. It was an off night for Curry in his return to his hometown, finishing with 16 points on 4-of-14 shooting from 3-point range.
Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim says the memory of the deadly accident on Interstate 690 East on February 20 is "never going away".
"But I also wanted to see Zion Williamson", said Coleman, the former Syracuse forward and top overall pick of the 1990 NBA Draft. Although Williamson's knee injury came just over 30 seconds into the team's game against the North Carolina Tar Heels, they will face the Syracuse Orange Saturday without the talented forward. "There's just nothing I can say about it".
"I've always felt, in life, you get a lot of things you have to overcome", Boeheim said. "I just can't, I can't describe it to you". Krzyzewski said he was surprised by the hug from Boeheim, but he was glad Boeheim made a decision to coach Saturday night.
Syracuse hasn't announced official attendance, but with extra courtside seats added since last season, and since the Carrier Dome is the largest on-campus basketball venue, the game is virtually guaranteed to break the NCAA on-campus record.
The accident happened on Interstate 690 in Syracuse on Wednesday night after the Orange beat No. 18 Louisville.
The Blue Devils' next game is Tuesday at No. 20 Virginia Tech, then they'll return home for a pair of games against Miami (FL) and Wake Forest, which kenpom.com projects Duke to win by at least 20 points in both.
