Cross Counter's Melbourne Cup victory is the first by an English horse while it also ended the Godolphin stable and owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's long quest to win the "race that stops a nation".
"The Melbourne Cup is much more than just a horse race, it's a 158 year old social and cultural tradition that brings Australia and New Zealand to a standstill", says Racing Board chief executive John Allen.

"I'm just lucky I can ride light and he's been unbelievably well prepared by Charlie Appleby".
Fellowes, who hopes to become the first British trainer to win the Melbourne Cup, described the parade experience as unbelievable.
Cross Counter's victory added another feather to Appleby's cap with the trainer having sent out Masar to win the Derby at Epsom back in June in the blue silks of Godolphin.
A year ago it was reported his efforts to win the Cup, combined with other racing operations Down Under, had set him back $1.1 billion.
