Pakistan Monday welcomed efforts of Saudi Arabia and Turkey to jointly investigate the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and expressed the hope that the two brotherly countries will be able to address the matter.
Khashoggi, a USA resident, Washington Post columnist and leading critic of the powerful Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, vanished after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago to get marriage documents. Turkish officials have said he was killed and dismembered.
More major players in global finance and industry are pulling out of a high-profile business conference in Saudi Arabia in the wake of reports that a Saudi writer critical of the government disappeared and is feared dead after entering a Saudi consulate in Turkey. "We heard about Khashoggi going missing the day before we were supposed to leave, two days before, but the next day was when we had to go and it just didn't feel like a smart move".
"If US sanctions are imposed on Saudi Arabia, we will be facing an economic disaster that would rock the entire world", Turki Aldakhil wrote.
Turkish media have published images from October 2 of an alleged 15-member Saudi "assassination squad" and video of suspicious movements at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul after Khashoggi's disappearance. They provided no further details. He said King Salman denied any knowledge and then floated the possibility that "rogue killers" could be responsible for Khashoggi. "Maybe I don't want to get into his mind, but it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers - I mean, who knows?"
