The two unnamed sources said on Saturday that the initial assessment of police was that Mr Khashoggi had been killed at the consulate.
Turan Kislakci, a friend of Jamal Khashoggi and the head of the Turkish-Arab Media Association, told The Associated Press on Sunday that officials also told him they "have evidence he was killed in a barbaric way" and dismembered.
Saudi officials have denied allegations that Khashoggi was killed at the consulate, calling them "baseless".
"I would like to confirm that.Jamal is not at the consulate nor in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the consulate and the embassy are working to search for him", consul-general Mohammad al-Otaiba told Reuters news agency.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman says Riyadh "will pay nothing" to the United States for the kingdom's "security", in rebuttal to US President Donald Trump who recently said King Salman would not last in power "for two weeks" without US military support. He has not been heard from since.
Saudi officials said hours after Khashoggi's disappearance that he had left the diplomatic mission.
The journalist was recently reported to have disappeared in Turkey's Istanbul after entering the Saudi Consulate. The AK Party said Mr Khashoggi's whereabouts would be uncovered.
Authorities came to see Khashoggi as too progressive and he was forced to resign as editor-in-chief of the Saudi daily Al-Watan in 2003.

Relations were already strained after Turkey sent troops to the Gulf state of Qatar previous year in a show of support after its Gulf neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, imposed an embargo on Doha.
Never one to mince his words, Khashoggi described a new Saudi era of "fear, intimidation, arrests and public shaming" in an article published in the Post a year ago. "Jamal was - or, as we hope, is - a committed, courageous journalist".
Khashoggi's disappearance has drawn attention to Prince Salman's crackdowns on his critics.
Khashoggi has lived in self-exile in the United States for the past year and a was regular contributor to the Washington Post's opinion section.
Yasin Aktay told broadcaster CNN Turk that Khashoggi had not left the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, which he had entered on Tuesday to obtain documents for a forthcoming marriage, in "normal ways".
"I have left my home, my family and my job, and I am raising my voice", Khashoggi wrote in September 2017.
"I believe late 2020, early 2021", Prince Mohammed told Bloomberg in an interview published late Friday when asked when he believed the IPO could be launched. "I can speak when so many cannot".
The source also stated that a security delegation of Saudi investigators arrived in Istanbul on Saturday based upon a request by the Saudi government, and the acceptance of the Turkish authorities. "Until otherwise demonstrated, he is still inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and the Saudi authorities are responsible for his safety and well-being", she said in a statement.
