After five years and multiple back surgeries, the long journey for Tiger Woods came full circle on Sunday.

The 14-time major champion's last tournament victory was in August 2013 in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

Tiger Woods, lower center, and Rory McIlroy, lower left, emerge from a horde of fans following Tiger on their way to the 18th green on the final day of the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

USA Today noted: "As Tiger made the walk to the 18th green at East Lake., an absolutely incredible sea of people followed him up the fairway".

Tiger Woods continued his impressive return to the Tour Championship as he joined Justin Rose in a share of the halfway lead at East Lake.

"We'll see what happens", said Woods on Saturday, going into the final round on Sunday.

"Simple math says that if I play a clean card, the guys behind me have to shoot 67 to force it into extra holes", Woods said. The fight, the grind, the tough conditions.

"He's played such good golf all year that it's just not surprising, " Phil Mickelson said of Woods, reports ESPN.

"I found a swing, put the pieces together and knew I could do it again". I was just hoping for a better lifestyle.

Of his Tour Championship victory, he said: "I was having a hard time not crying on that last hole".

Woods finished Sunday 11 under for the tournament, a two-stroke lead over second place.

The 42-year-old had gone more than five years in between victories before his historic win at the PGA Championship on Monday (AEST).

As he tapped in for the win, he raised his hands and grinned, then hugged McIlroy and his caddie, Joe LaCava, as the crowd chanted "U-S-A", a nod to the Ryder Cup next week and a release for the crowd.

At one stage, Woods was also projected to win the FedEx Cup outright with Justin Rose dropping rapidly down the leaderboard.

Johnson had first moved to world number one in February 2017 and remained atop of the Rankings for 64-weeks until the second week in May this year.

Fowler - who began the day alongside Woods - recovered from an opening-hole bogey to drain a 25-footer at the next and post back-to-back birdies from the fourth to reach the turn one ahead.

Woods had a five-shot lead after six holes of the final round, and there is no other player that generates interest in the sport, especially after the back surgeries he has overcome.
