A seventh person has died in connection with the Carr Fire after a Pacific Gas & Electric employee was killed Saturday. Jairus Ayeta, who was in his 20s, worked as an apprentice lineman and was part of a PG&E crew working in "dangerous terrain" to restore power, she said.

The fire also killed two firefighters. By late Saturday those fires covered 229,000 acres -more than two-thirds the size of the city of Los Angeles, and were considered 32 percent contained, according to Reuters.

The Lake and Mendocino county fires, known as the Mendocino Complex, have destroyed 55 structures and continue to threaten thousands more, burning through more than 200,000 acres and leading to 18,000 residents being evacuated.

There are two Mendocino Complex Fires, according to officials.

The Carr Fire has scorched 154,524 acres of land since July 23, when authorities say it was triggered by the "mechanical failure of a vehicle" that caused sparks to fly in tinderbox-dry conditions. The twirling tower of flame reached speeds of 143 miles per hour, which rivaled some of the most destructive Midwest tornadoes, NWS meteorologist Duane Dykema said. Four of the state's largest six fires have occurred since 2012.

As crews in California battle 17 wildfires, Governor Edmund Brown asked President Donald Trump for federal money to bolster the ongoing emergency response and help residents recover.

"Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-priced loans to cover uninsured property loses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster", the White House said in a written statement. "Fire managers are continuously assessing conditions in the area and will work directly with and will immediately advise park managers as conditions change and it becomes safe to reopen", the agency said in a statement.

The blaze burned so furiously on July 26 that it created a "fire whirl". That fire under command of the National Forest Service. The whirl uprooted trees and tore roofs from homes, Dykema said.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman Jane LaBoa said wildfire remains several miles from the evacuated communities along the eastern shore of Clear Lake.

The Mendocino Complex fire, as it's called, consists of two separate conflagrations that had consumed more than 200,000 acres by Saturday afternoon and had forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

Hundreds of colleagues, family and friends attended a memorial service Saturday in Fresno for National Forest Service Capt. Brian Hughes, the Fresno Bee reported.
