Even as Beryl approaches Maria-battered and still recovering Puerto Rico from the south early Monday as a tropical storm, few were ignoring the threat two days out. Beryl has a chance to remain a hurricane for a couple of days before strong upper-level winds are likely to weaken or destroy it as it reaches the Caribbean Islands.
Further strengthening of the storm is likely, and Chris is expected to become a hurricane by mid-week. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique, St. Martin, and St. Barthelemy, Saba and St. Eustatius and St. Maarten.
Puerto Rico is not now under any warnings or watches from the hurricane center.

Since small tropical cyclones like Beryl often have a tendency to strengthen quickly over a short period of time, some additional strengthening is forecast today.

Puerto Rico is nearly entirely outside the cone of uncertainly, but residents there - still recovering from Hurricane Maria past year - are keeping a wary eye on the storm.
