A pair of San Luis Obispo County residents who were camping in Big Sur became unlikely heroes Friday, locating an OR woman who had been missing for seven days after driving her auto over a cliff.
Ms Hernandez was conscious but had a shoulder injury and appeared to have suffered concussion, police said.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office handed the investigation off to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office on Thursday after surveillance video from a business showed Hernandez traveling south on Highway 1 into Monterey County.
Rescuers got her to the top of the cliff, where a helicopter flew her to hospital.
She sent a text around 10 p.m. July 5 saying she was exhausted and stopping to sleep in her auto at a grocery store parking lot in Half Moon Bay, in San Mateo County, said a missing persons flier. Her vehicle was found partially in the water, according to officials. "Reports are she was talking and could walk".
Angela Hernandez was found alive after vanishing for a week
Sheriffs said she had told her sister she would stay overnight in a auto park before continuing her journey the next morning, but they had not heard from her after 6 July.
She had been driving from her home in Portland to Los Angeles to visit her sister. It's not going to be an easy recovery.
Hernandez told investigators that she plunged off the 200 ft (60m) cliff after swerving to avoid hitting an animal on Highway 1.
Angela Hernandez poses with her Jeep. "She was found by two people walking in the area, who called 911".
"I just want to thank everybody that helped", Hernandez's sister, Isabel Hernandez, told the news station through tears.
