Authorities say five people have been charged in a "smuggling scheme" following a deadly crash involving an SUV fleeing Border Patrol agents and sheriff's deputies in South Texas. Investigators say Monsivais was traveling more than 100 miles per hour on Texas Highway 85, before losing control and overturning the vehicle.

Out of 14 people in the vehicle, four were killed on the spot while a fifth person died at the hospital in San Antonio, the Dimmit County Sheriff said.

"From what we can tell the vehicle ran off the road and caught gravel and then tried to recorrect", Boyd told The Associated Press, adding that the vehicle turned over several times.

Officials said four of the immigrants died at the scene, while nine others were injured. One person died upon arriving at the hospital, reports ABC News. The driver was not ejected in the crash, and was sitting upright in his seat when a deputy took him into custody.

Boyd said the driver was known to police, and had been seen in the area "last week", either scouting the area or looking for immigrants to smuggle.

The Texas facility is known as Ursula, though immigrants are reportedly calling it La Perrera - dog kennel in Spanish - in reference to the cages used to hold children and adults who have ended up there after crossing the border from Mexico illegally.

"There were 14 people in the vehicle, including the driver and a passenger, whom we suspect of being USA citizens".

Authorities said his SUV was part of a three auto caravan, carrying at least 21 people from Mexico and two people from Honduras. A second border patrol agent was able to pull over the second vehicle but the third refused to stop.

According to a federal criminal complaint, the SUV was traveling with 13 suspected undocumented immigrants, including one juvenile, during the time of the crash.

"This, I think, is a flawless example, of why our borders need to be secured", Sheriff Boyd explained. The truck quickly stopped and an agent approached the driver and requested permission to look in the back of the vehicle. After following the truck for a short distance, the agents activated their emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop for an immigration inspection. "It is a major problem".
