President Donald Trump on Friday expressed verbal support for recently introduced, bi-partisan legislation that seeks to codify legal protections for state-sanctioned marijuana-related activities.

Trump made his comments to a gaggle of reporters Friday morning just before he boarded a helicopter on his way to the G-7 summit in Canada. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Trump said, "I support Sen. Along with guarding states' right for regulating marijuana, the bill would also remove industrial hemp from the federal Controlled Substances Act, taking the non-psychoactive strain of cannabis used to make fabric, construction materials and more out of the legal gray area that's held the industry back for decades. Instead, it allows USA states, territories and tribal governments to develop their own marijuana regulations without fear of federal interference, as long as the regulations meet certain guidelines. "This would spell the end of federal interference as long as the state laws and the businesses operating under them stayed within the guard rails of the STATES Act". A further 20 states permit use of weed for medicinal use. "Not putting words in the mouth of the White House, but I think this will be an opportunity for us to fulfill what is that federalism approach".

The House of Commons MPs will now have to decide what to do about the the nearly four dozen amendments to Bill C-45 that were made in the Senate. The appointment of strongly anti-cannabis Jeff Sessions as attorney general seemed to signal trouble ahead for the newly burgeoning industry.

SHAPIRO: But this is hardly the first time the president and his attorney general have disagreed on something.

Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner MP Glen Motz says he is concerned there won't be enough debate on the amendments to the bill.

Several marijuana proposals are floating around Congress, including sweeping bills embraced by leading Democrats that would end federal prohibition for good and decriminalize marijuana nationwide.
